Introduction
  • Characterized by a false diverticula of the esophagus
  • Most patients male and over 60 years old
  • Pathoanatomy
    • usually caused by motor abnormalities of the esophagus
    • pulsion diverticula involving only the mucosa 
      • located at junction of pharynx and esophagus
      • area of muscular weakness between cricopharyngeus muscle and lower inferior constrictor (Killian's triangle)  
Presentation
  • Symptoms
    • dysphagia
    • regurgitation
    • choking
  • Physical exam
    • neck mass
    • halitosis (bad breath)
      • due to trapped food particles
  • Complications
    • increase risk of aspiration pneumonia
    • ulceration and bleeding
    • increase risk of iatrogenic perforation
Evaluation
  • Barium swallow
    • will show collection of dye posterior to esophagus 
  • Transcutaneous ultrasound
Treatment
  •  Operative
    • diverticulectomy
    • myotomy
