Overview
  • Test description 
    • antigen is an insoluble particle (RBC or latex bead is most common)
      • if antibodies are present for the specific antigen they will bind and the particles will leave suspension
  • Clinical utility
    • latex bead agglutination used in diagnosis of CSF infections
    • Coombs test
      • direct
        • patient's blood drawn (may include RBC's coats with Ig)
        • Coombs reagent (anti-human Ig) added
        • positive test if precipitation occurs
      • indirect
        • normal RBCs added to patient serum
        • Coombs reagent (anti-human Ig) added
        • positive test if precipitation occurs
