Introduction
  • Function
    • thirst and water balance
      • via ADH
    • adenohypophysis control
      • via production of releasing hormones
    • hunger
      • via ventromedial and lateral regions
    • autonomic regulation
    • temperature regulation
      • via anterior and posterior regions
    • sexual urges
      • via septal nucleus
  • Inputs
    • OVLT
      • senses changes in osmolarity
        • a detected increase in osmolarity results in ADH release
    • area postrema
      • senses the presence of certain chemicals
        • dectection results in nausea and vomiting
  • Anatomical regions and their functions
    Region Function Notes
    Supraoptic nucleus Produces ADH
    Paraventricular nucleus Produces oxytocin
    Lateral area  Produces hunger
    • Think: you become more lateral when lateral area is stimulated
    • Destruction → anorexia
    • Inhibited by leptin
    Ventromedial area Produces satiety
    • Think: you become more medial when the medial area is stimulated
    • Destruction → hyperphagia
    • Stimulated by leptin
Anterior hypothalamus Produces a body temperature decrease
    • Via parasympathetic input
    • Destruction results in hyperthermia
Posterior hypothalamus Produces a body temperature increase
    • Via sympathetic input
    • Destruction results in poikilothermia
      • inability to regulate temperature
    Septal nucleus Stimulates sexual urges
    Suprachiasmatic nucleus  Regulates circadian rhythm
